The Holy Venerable Martyrs Tancred and Torthred, Hermits, and Tova, Anchoress, of Thorney

Tancred and Torthred, hermits, and Tova, an anchoress, were solitaries of Thorney in the fenland of eastern England, put to death by the Danes — in 869 by Orthodox England's reckoning, 870 by the York calendar's — in the years when the great heathen army was harrying the eastern kingdoms. Their relics were venerated at Thorney before the Norman Conquest: the Old English list of the saints' resting-places names all three among the saints resting there, beside Botolph and other fenland saints. They are commemorated together on September 30 in the Antiochian GB&I calendar.

The record of these three saints is a martyrology line and a pre-Conquest relic-list; it permits no biography, and what follows is the whole of it.

Orthodox England's notice reads, entire: "Two hermits and an anchoress martyred by the Danes at Thorney in England," under the year 869. The York calendar styles them "hermits and martyrs" under the year 870. The two dates bracket the years in which the Danish great army devastated the monasteries of eastern England — the campaign in which King Edmund of the East Angles also perished — but no source consulted for this entry describes the raid on Thorney itself; the narrative of their deaths rests on these notices, the mediaeval Thorney house-tradition behind them not having been directly consulted.

The pre-Conquest witness to their veneration is the Old English list of the saints' resting-places (the Secgan, 11th century), which records resting "on Þornige" — at Thorney — the saints Botolph, Athulf, Huna, Þancred (Tancred), Torhtred, Herefrith, Cissa, Benedict, and Tova ("sancte Toua"; the parallel Latin recension has "sanctaque Tova," attesting that Tova was a woman). Their relics thus lay enshrined at Thorney, in the company of Botolph of Iken and the other fenland saints, within two centuries of their deaths. Liebermann, the list's editor, annotates Torhtred as brother and Tova as sister of Tancred; the resting-places list itself transmits no kinship, and neither does Orthodox England or the York calendar.

Nothing whatever is transmitted in the sources consulted of their origins, their manner of life beyond the callings of hermit and anchoress, or the circumstances of their deaths.

Feast and commemoration

September 30 (church date; Old Calendar civil October 13). The witness for this commemoration in the Antiochian GB&I layer is the St Constantine York calendar, whose line for this day reads "SS Tancred, Torthred and Tova, hermits and martyrs (870)." Orthodox England keeps the same day. They do not appear on the OCA's September 30 page (checked live 2026-07-29). The three are commemorated as a unit, with one calendar line and no independent cultus of any member, and accordingly share this one entry. Iconography

No image of any of the three is known to this entry — no mediaeval representation, no attribute, no Orthodox icon was found in the sources consulted. They are listed in the the list of icons still being sought index with no current leads.

Disputed questions

Year of martyrdom. Orthodox England gives 869; the York calendar gives 870. Both fall within the great army's harrying of eastern England; the sources consulted do not decide between them.
Kinship. The tradition that the three were siblings appears in Liebermann's editorial annotation (citing Bishop) but not in the resting-places list itself nor in either calendar witness; it is recorded here as a reported tradition, not asserted as fact.
