Holy and Righteous Job the Long-Suffering
The holy and righteous Job is the saint of the Old Testament book that bears his name, a man of the land of Uz whom Scripture calls blameless and upright, fearing God and turning away from evil. Tradition identifies him with Jobab, a descendant of Esau, who lived perhaps in the second millennium before Christ. He was rich in flocks and herds and was the father of seven sons and three daughters, and he offered sacrifice continually for his children, lest they had sinned.
When Satan obtained leave from God to test him, Job lost in a single day his wealth, his servants, and all his children, and was struck shortly afterwards with painful sores from head to foot. Sitting on the ash heap, scraping himself with a potsherd, urged by his wife to curse God and die, and pressed by three friends to admit hidden sin, he held fast to his integrity and his faith: 'The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.' Out of the whirlwind God answered him, and he was restored with twice his former wealth and given seven new sons and three daughters of surpassing beauty. The Church reads the book of Job in Holy Week, seeing in him a type of Christ, the truly righteous one who suffered without cause.

16Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.
17Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.
