Greatmartyr Catherine of Alexandria
Catherine of Alexandria (†c. 305) is among the most celebrated of the virgin-martyrs, a noblewoman of Alexandria of rare learning and beauty who, converted to Christ through a vision of the Theotokos, confronted the emperor during a pagan festival and was set to dispute with fifty of the empire's foremost philosophers, whom she confounded and converted, so that they went to the fire confessing Christ. Imprisoned, she drew the empress Augusta, the general Porphyrius and two hundred soldiers to the faith; when the spiked wheel prepared for her was shattered by an angel, she was beheaded. Her relics, tradition says, were borne by angels to Mount Sinai, where the great monastery that bears her name preserves them. She is invoked by students, philosophers and women in childbirth, and her cult, immense in both East and West, is kept on November 24 (Greek usage November 25).

Holy Martyr Mercurius of Smolensk (1238)
Mercurius of Smolensk (†c. 1238) is the soldier-martyr and patron of the city of Smolensk, a warrior of Slavic — the tradition says Moravian and princely — birth who served the prince of Smolensk and secretly led an ascetic life. When a Tatar host under Batu's invasion threatened the city, the Mother of God, it is related, summoned him through her wonderworking Smolensk icon to go out against the enemy; he fell upon the Tatar camp by night, slew their champion and struck down many, aided by radiant heavenly warriors and by the Virgin herself, until he died in the battle. Buried in the Dormition cathedral of Smolensk, where his sandals were long preserved, he was venerated as the city's special defender from the sixteenth century. He is commemorated on November 24.

Mercurius of Caesarea
Mercurius of Caesarea (†c. 250) is the great-martyr and soldier-saint of the persecutions of Decius and Valerian, a young officer of Scythian descent who, armed by an angel with a sword, won a great victory for the Roman army and was made its commander, but who then cast down his honours and confessed Christ, enduring fierce tortures and beheading at Caesarea in Cappadocia. He is venerated above all for a wonder wrought a century after his death: in answer to the prayer of Basil the Great, the martyr — depicted spear in hand upon an icon of the Theotokos — was sent from heaven to slay Julian the Apostate on his Persian campaign, the tradition to which the dying emperor's cry, "Thou hast conquered, O Galilean," is joined. His feast is November 24 (Greek usage November 25).

Mercurius of the Kiev Near Caves
Mercurius was a monk of the Kiev Caves who was taken from the cave to the episcopal throne of Smolensk, and who died in his city under the Tatar sword — by the Russian reckoning in 1239, in the aftermath of Batu's invasion of Rus'. The tradition preserves one wholly characteristic detail: dying, he directed that his body be laid in a coffin and set adrift on the Dnieper, to be buried wherever it should come to land; the coffin floated down to the Caves monastery at Kiev, his own house of profession, and he was laid in the Near (Antoniev) Caves, where his relics rest. His memory is kept on August 7, and again on November 24 with the great-martyr whose name he bore.

Troparia & kontakia
Kontakion — Tone 2
Raise up now, O lovers of the martyrs, a sacred and godly choir, singing the praise of the all-revered Catherine; for in the arena she proclaimed Christ and trampled upon the serpent, stopping the mouths of the orators' knowledge.
Magnification
We magnify thee, O holy great-martyr Catherine, and we honour thy precious sufferings, which thou didst endure for Christ.
Troparion — Tone 5
Let us praise the all-lauded bride of Christ, the divine Catherine, guardian of Sinai and our defence and help; for by the power of the Spirit she brilliantly silenced the eloquence of the ungodly, and now, crowned as a martyr, she asks great mercy for us all.
Troparion — Tone 4
Thy martyr Mercurius, O Lord, in his contest received the crown of incorruption from Thee our God; for having Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and broke the feeble boldness of the demons. By his intercessions, O Christ God, save our souls.
Troparion — Tone 8 (common of a venerable hierarch of the Caves)
Having loved the silence of the caves, thou wast called from it to shepherd the flock of Smolensk, and didst lay down thy life for it in the day of the barbarian; and the river bore thee back, O holy father Mercurius, to the house of thy repentance. Entreat Christ God that our souls may be saved.

Epistle
2 Thessalonians 1.1-10
1Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; 4So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: 5Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer: 6Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; 7And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; 10When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
Gospel
Luke 17.20-25
20And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: 21Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. 22And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it. 23And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them. 24For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day. 25But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.
