Saint of the day
Greatmartyr Artemius at Antioch
Artemius of Antioch (†362) was a high-ranking commander and imperial official under Constantine the Great and Constantius II, who rose to be dux (military governor) of Egypt and was entrusted with the solemn translation of the relics of the Apostles Andrew and Luke to Constantinople in 357. When Julian the Apostate set out to restore paganism, Artemius confronted the emperor at Antioch, openly rebuking his impiety and the torture of Christian bishops; for this he was stripped of rank, cruelly tortured, and beheaded. The Church venerates him as a great-martyr and wonderworker, and his healing shrine at the Oxeia in Constantinople — whose recorded "Miracles of Artemius" are a major source for Byzantine social history — made him the special patron of those suffering from hernia and diseases of the lower body. His feast is October 20.

St Gerasimus the New, ascetic of Cephalonia (1579)
Gerasimus of Cephalonia (c. 1509–1579) is the great saint and heavenly patron of the Ionian island of Cephalonia (Kefalonia). Born to the noble Notaras family of the Peloponnese, he became a monk on Zakynthos and Mount Athos, made long pilgrimage to the Holy Land — where he served twelve years at the Sepulchre of the Lord and was ordained by the Patriarch of Jerusalem — and after years of extreme asceticism, including forty days in the desert of the Jordan, settled at last in a cave on Cephalonia. There he restored a ruined church at Omala and founded a women's monastery, the "New Jerusalem," which he governed for thirty years in ceaseless prayer and manual toil. Famed as a healer of the sick and above all of the demon-possessed, he reposed in 1579; his relics were found incorrupt two years later and remain so, venerated in his monastery to this day. His repose is kept on August 16 and the uncovering of his relics on October 20.

Artemius of Verkola
Artemius of Verkola was a peasant boy of twelve from the village of Verkola on the Pinega, in the far north of Russia, who was killed by lightning in a summer thunderstorm on 23 June 1545 while working in the field beside his father. Because a sudden death in a storm was read by his neighbours as a stroke of divine anger, his body was not buried in the churchyard but laid in a pine wood, covered with brushwood and birch bark, and left. Thirty-two years later, in 1577, a light was seen over the place; the body was found incorrupt, was carried into the church of St Nicholas at Verkola, and at once became the centre of an extraordinary series of healings during an epidemic that was then wasting the Pinega. A monastery grew up at the spot. He is one of the very few saints of the Russian Church glorified neither for martyrdom nor for asceticism nor for office, but simply as a righteous child, and he is a patron of children and of the Russian North.

Matrona of Chios
Matrona of Chios (fifteenth century) was a nun and abbess of the island of Chios, venerated throughout the island as its wonderworking mother. Born Maria in the village of Volissos to wealthy and pious parents, she rejected marriage for the monastic life, distributed her inheritance to the poor, and founded a women's monastery in the Palaiokastro district of Chios, over which she presided as abbess under the name Matrona. Renowned in life and after death for charity to the poor and for the healing of the sick, she reposed about the middle of the fifteenth century; a proper service already composed for her in a manuscript of 1455 fixes the latest date of her repose. She is commemorated on October 20 and again on July 15 for the finding of her head.

Troparia & kontakia
Apolytikion — Tone 1
O faithful, let us praise the divine Gerasimus, protector of the Orthodox and angel in the body, the wonderworker and God-bearer newly shown forth to us; for worthily hath he received from God the ever-flowing grace of healings: he strengtheneth the sick and healeth those vexed by demons. Wherefore he poureth forth cures upon those who honour him.
Apolytikion — Tone 3
Following in the footsteps of Christ, O venerable one, thou didst forsake the delight of the world and didst imitate in the flesh the way of life of the angels; wherefore with the gifts of the Spirit thou hast made radiant the island of Chios that bore thee, O all-praised one. Therefore with joy it crieth out to thee: Rejoice, O Matrona most blessed.
Kontakion — Tone 2
Gathered together, let us worthily praise in hymns the pious and crown-bearing martyr, who raised up the trophies of victory over the enemy — Artemius, the greatest among the martyrs and most abundant giver of miracles; for he intercedeth with the Lord on behalf of us all.
Kontakion — Tone 8
As a pure and unblemished offering thou wast brought to the Lord in thy twelfth year, and the thunder that struck thee down was to thee the chariot of thine ascent; and now, O righteous Artemius, standing before the throne with the choirs of children, thou pourest out healings upon the sick who run to thy shrine, that we may cry to thee: Rejoice, O boast of the northern land.
Sticheron
Let us honour Artemius, the noetic luminary of the faith, for he reproved the most hateful emperor; and with the blood of his martyrdom God empurpled the Church. Wherefore he received also the ungrudging grace of healings, to cure the diseases of those who with faith run to the shrine of his relics.
Troparion — Tone 4
Made steadfast by the true faith of Christ, O passion-bearer, thou didst vanquish the impious and tyrant emperor together with his idolatrous arrogance. Therefore wast thou endowed by the Great King, who reigneth eternally, with a most radiant crown of victory. O great Artemius, healing all who are sick and who call upon thee, entreat Christ God to save our souls.
Troparion — Tone 2
By the command of the Most High thou wast taken from the earth in thy childhood, O blessed Artemius, and wast borne up in innocence to the mansions of heaven; and thy body, laid unhonoured in the wood, God glorified with incorruption and with wonders. Wherefore the land of the Pinega, once ashamed of thee, now rejoices in thee: entreat Christ our God that our souls may be saved.

Epistle
Ephesians 5.25-33
25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
Gospel
Luke 9.44-50
44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. 45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying. 46Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. 47And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him, 48And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. 49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. 50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
